Atlantic Guitars
A day to celebrate the guitar as a bridge between continents
On June 24th, the Museum of Nature and Archaeology (MUNA) will become the sonic epicenter of a unique day: Atlantic Guitars, a multidisciplinary event that celebrates the guitar not just as an instrument, but as a symbol of connection between cultures on both sides of the ocean. This will be the first edition of the annual program Atlantic Roots, launched by Museos de Tenerife, with free admission and access via registration on the Tickety platform.
The day will begin with a lutherie workshop led by Reverón himself, who will open the program by sharing his experience and passion with the public. Following this, Brazilian guitarist Gabriel Selvage will offer a masterclass on technique and interpretation, promising a session brimming with musicality. Selvage — instrumentalist, composer, and arranger — has performed on stages around the world and collaborated with renowned figures such as Yamandu Costa, Guinga, and Elza Soares. In 2018, he was awarded the Açorianos Prize and in 2021 received a Latin Grammy nomination. His presence in Tenerife is one of the major highlights of this event.
From early morning, visitors can enjoy a permanent exhibition of instruments in the museum’s central courtyard, the Patio de las Palmeras. There, key figures in the Canary Islands music sector — such as Musicanarias, David Sánchez, and Eduardo Reverón Cabrera — will display a curated selection of handcrafted and international brand guitars. Musicanarias, a cornerstone of the archipelago’s music scene since 1965, will showcase iconic models from Alhambra Guitars, crafted in Spain with tradition and skill, and Taylor Guitars, symbols of Californian innovation. Alongside them will be the guitars and timples of luthier David Sánchez, bearing the Artesanía Canaria seal and combining contemporary design with island soul. The exhibit will be rounded out by the creations of Eduardo Reverón Cabrera, a young luthier representing a new generation of artisans committed to sonic excellence.
At midday, the Patio Manuel Oraá will host a recital by Carlos Oramas, a leading figure in early guitar music in the Canary Islands, whose career has brought him recognition in European conservatories and specialized festivals. His music will transport us to past eras, evoking sounds that still resonate in our collective memory.
After a lunch break, activities will resume in the Auditorium with another lutherie workshop, this time led by José Romero Garrido, a renowned master luthier revered by professional musicians worldwide. Following that, music journalist Carlos Galilea will take us on a journey through world music, drawing on his experience hosting the iconic Radio 3 show Cuando los elefantes sueñan con la música, a benchmark in jazz, Brazilian music, and global sounds.
As the grand finale, Gabriel Selvage will return to the stage at dusk to offer a recital in the Patio Antonio Pintor. It promises to be a vibrant, intimate, and deeply Atlantic closing — a musical round trip between cultures, generations, and geographies.
The MUNA, host of the event, has in recent years established itself as a landmark cultural venue in the Canary Islands. Its historic architecture, commitment to scientific outreach, and dedication to fostering dialogue between nature, art, and society make it the perfect setting for this celebration of the guitar as a vehicle for identity and connection.
Atlantic Guitars is more than an event: it is a sonic tribute to the roots that unite us. A public, free, educational experience committed to sustainability and diversity.
